Setting up and configuring POS hardware (printers, scanner, card readers)

Prior to connecting your hardware, check that your devices are compatible here.

Note: We strongly recommend using the specific devices listed as they have been tested and we are certain about their compatibility. If you want to try a different brand or model within the same brand, we cannot guarantee it will be compatible with our POS and we cannot support it.

This article will give you instructions on how to connect your printer, scanner and integrated payment device. The instructions are also available in the app itself.

The in-app hardware settings pages can be accessed in your POS app from the management menu by swiping left to right on the basket screen.

You will able to set up your:

  • Printer: Star mPOP, Star TSP654IIBI, Star TSP143IIIBI (or select to have the receipt saved to photos)
  • Scanner: Universal Barcode Scanner SocketScan S740, Socket CHS 7Ci/7Di - 1D Imager (discontinued from sales but still works with POS)
  • Card reader:
    • Square chip and PIN and contactless card reader
    • PayPal chip card reader
    • Zettle Reader 2
    • Adyen Verifone V400m portable terminal
    • Moneris Pin Pad E355
    • USAePAY VEGA 3000

If you are connecting your devices through the iPad’s Bluetooth settings, go to Settings > Bluetooth on the iPad.

Printer | Star mPOP

  1. In POS app, slide towards the right to go to Settings > Hardware > Printer > select the printer type from the list at the top.

  2. Make sure you have connected the cash drawer to your printer (if required) before turning on the printer.
  3. Make sure your Bluetooth is enabled. If any printer is already paired under iOS Settings > Bluetooth, then select it and choose to forget it.
  4. Turn on your printer using the power button on the side.
  5. In your iPad Settings, under iOS Settings > Bluetooth, select the printer from the list to pair it with your iPad.
  6. Go back to Settings > Hardware > Printer in the POS app, and choose your printer in the Connected printers section. A tick will then be displayed next to it.

  1. In POS app, swipe right to go to Settings > Hardware > Printer > select the printer type from the list at the top.
  2. Make sure you select your printer type from the list.

  3. Make sure you have connected the cash drawer to your printer (if required) before turning on the printer.
  4. Make sure your Bluetooth is enabled and if any printer is already paired under iOS Settings > Bluetooth, then select it and choose to forget it.
  5. Switch your printer on and press the PAIR button on the rear interface of the printer until the LED flashes green.

  6. In your iPad Settings, under iOS Settings > Bluetooth, select the printer from the list to pair it with your iPad.
  7. Go back to Settings > Hardware > Printer and in the Connected printers section, choose your printer. A tick will then be displayed next to it.

Scanner | Bluetooth Universal Barcode Scanner SocketScan S740

  1. In your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and forget any scanners which are already connected. Then disable Bluetooth.
  2. Turn the scanner on by holding down the power button. Make sure the scanner is discoverable (i.e. unpaired). The blue light should be blinking fast.
  3. Scan this barcode to change the profile to iOS Application Mode (MFI-SPP):barcodescanner.png
  4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPad and enable Bluetooth. A search for Bluetooth devices will begin.
  5. Tap Socket S740[xxxxxx] in the list of other devices found. After a few seconds, the status will change to “Connected” and the LED on the scanner will stop blinking and turn solid blue.
    Note: The characters in brackets are the last 6 characters of the Bluetooth address.
  6. Launch the POS app.The scanner will beep once indicating that it is connected.

Scanner | Bluetooth Socket CHS 7Ci/7Di - 1D Imager

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled, and if any scanner is already paired to your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, select it and choose to forget it. Stay on the Bluetooth settings screen.
  2. Start by resetting your scanner:
    1. On your scanner, hold down the large scan button and then press the small power button until you hear three beeps (if you only hear two beeps, please repeat the process).
    2. While on the Bluetooth settings screen, you should see the Socket scanner in the "Other devices" section. If you don't, try pressing the small power button until you hear two beeps (you may need to try it twice).
    3. Select your Socket scanner from the "Other devices" list and wait until it appears under "My devices" as "Connected".
    4. Tap on the blue circle on the scanner's line and click "Forget this device".
    5. Turn the scanner on (you'll hear two beeps) and scan this barcode to reset the scanner:

    6. The scanner will play several tones and then will automatically turn off.
  3. Then put your scanner in iOS mode:
    1. Press the small power button until the scanner turns on (you'll hear two beeps)
    2. Scan this barcode to put the scanner in iOS mode (make sure you hear three beeps after scanning this barcode):

    3. After you hear the three beeps, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap on your Socket scanner to connect to it. You are ready!

Card reader | Square chip and PIN and contactless card reader

Please note that the Square card reader is currently compatible with US and CA accounts only.

To set up your Square chip and PIN and contactless card reader (via Bluetooth):

  1. Start by adding Square as a card payment method in Brightpearl's back office (if it hasn't already been done). You can find out how here.
  2. Make sure you have added POS Square as a payment method in the Brightpearl back office, under Settings > Brightpearl POS > Store settings > {select store} > Payment methods.
  3. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPad, and if any card reader is already paired to your device under Settings > Bluetooth, then select it and choose to forget it.
  4. Make sure the device is charged. To check if it's ready, press the side button once. If you see four green lights flashing once, the device is charged and ready. You can find more information about the Square reader here.
  5. Go to your iPad and launch the latest version of the Brightpearl POS app.
  6. When you first log into the POS app, you'll be prompted to allow the app to access your microphone, location and Bluetooth:

  7. POS will then prompt you to connect to a Square reader:

  8.  Turn the Square reader to pairing mode by pressing the side button for three to four seconds until you see the four orange flashing lights. You can find more information about the Square reader here.

  9. Select to pair with the Square reader.

  10. POS will then display the menu for the connected Square card reader while the status is "Updating".

  11. When the connection is established, the status will change to "Ready".

  12. Click the back button and close the modal.

  13. When you have a basket ready for checkout, select your Square payment method.

  14. POS will display the amount to be paid and the Square reader will display one green light

  15. Tap the card to make a contactless payment, or insert the card into the reader.

  16. When the payment is approved, POS displays a confirmation message.

  17. You are then given the option to send the receipt to the customer's phone, email it to their email address, or not send it at all.

  18. POS completes the transaction and moves to the Sale Complete screen.

Card reader | PayPal Here reader

To set up your PayPal Chip Card Reader (via Bluetooth):

  1. Start by adding PayPal Here as a card payment method in Brightpearl's back office (if it hasn't already been done). You can find out how here.
  2. Make sure you have added PayPal Here as a payment method in the Brightpearl back office, under Settings > Brightpearl POS > Store settings > {select store} > Payment methods.
  3. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPad, and if any card reader is already paired to your device under Settings > Bluetooth, then select it and choose to forget it.
  4. Make sure the device is turned on. The device screen will display a message: "Open the app on your phone or tablet". Press and hold the Bluetooth PAIR button on the front of the card reader until the LED flashes blue.
  5. The device screen will now display: "Turn on Bluetooth in phone/tablet settings 
Select PayPal XYZ".
  6. In your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select the PayPal Here reader to pair it.
  7. In the POS app, go to Settings > Hardware  > Card Reader > PayPal Here  and update the firmware of the card reader using the "Update card reader firmware" button (if it's enabled).

  8. Return to POS and take a basket to the checkout screen. Select the PayPal Here payment method.
  9. On selecting the PayPal Here payment method for the first time, a popup will come up, showing the available card reader(s). Select your card reader and take the payment.
  10. After the transaction is completed, the PayPal Here device screen will show “Ready to accept payments”. You are ready!

Card reader | Zettle Reader 2

To set up your Zettle Reader 2 (via Bluetooth):

  1. Start by adding Zettle as a card payment method in Brightpearl's back office (if it hasn't already been done). You can find out how here.
  2. Make sure you have added PayPal Here as a payment method in the Brightpearl back office, under Settings > Brightpearl POS > Store settings > {select store} > Payment methods.
  3. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPad, and if any card reader is already paired to your device under Settings > Bluetooth, then select it and choose to forget it.
  4. Return to POS, and take a basket to the checkout screen. Select the Zettle payment method.
  5. You will be prompted to sign into your Zettle account. Once done, the app will display the message "No card reader connected".
    1. Make sure the device is turned on and select "Connect card reader". Then select your card reader from the list and confirm the three-digit code that the S/N ends in (found at the back of the card reader).
    2. You will then see a six-digit number on your card reader, which should match the six-digit number that is seen on your app screen. Confirm both numbers.
    3. The card reader will then display the payment amount and the app will confirm the card reader is connected.
  6. You will then be able to complete the transaction. Should you get the message to allow Brightpearl POS to access your location, please select Allow.

Card reader | Adyen portable terminal

To set up your Adyen Verifone V400m Terminal via WiFi:

  1. Start by adding Adyen as a card payment method in Brightpearl's back office (if it hasn't already been done). You can find out how here.
  2. Make sure you have added Adyen as a payment method in the Brightpearl back office, under Settings > Brightpearl POS > Store settings > {select store} > Payment methods.
  3. Connect the Adyen terminal to Wi-Fi via the terminal's menu.
  4. Log into your Adyen customer account and secure you have the right Adyen Customer Area settings:
    • Enable Terminal API: Yes
    • Enable WebSockets: Yes
    • Roles and Associated Accounts: have all roles enabled
    • In the User List, make sure the Web Service user type is associated with your accounts.
  5. Reboot your terminal to load the new settings.
  6. Board your terminal through the Adyen Customer Area at Point of Sale > Board terminals or on the terminal screen > Board the terminal.
  7. Return to POS, and take a basket to the checkout screen. Select the Adyen payment method, then select your terminal from the list and you are ready.

Card reader | Moneris Pin Pad

Note: The current integration with Moneris payments in POS does not support refunds to debit cards.

To set up your Moneris E355 Pin Pad via WiFi:

  1. Start by adding Moneris as a card payment method in Brightpearl's back office (if it hasn't already been done). You can find out how here.
  2. Make sure you have added Moneris as a payment method in the Brightpearl back office, under Settings > Brightpearl POS > Store settings > {select store} > Payment methods.
  3. Power on the Moneris device by long pressing the circle button.
  4. If you see the Welcome/Bonjour screen, press the 1 and < buttons simultaneously, and keep them pressed until you see the Language/Langue screen. 
  5. In the Language/Langue screen, please select your preferred language. If at any point you need to return to the root menu, you can select the X button and then press 1 and < simultaneously.
  6. In the Terminal setup screen, select 1 (Communication).
  7. In the Communication screen, select 3 (Moneris Cloud).
  8. In the HOST ENV screen, select 1 (Production).
  9. Select 3 to scan for WiFi networks.
  10. Select your preferred WiFi network (you can move up by pressing 2, down by pressing 5 and finally press the green circle button when at the right network).
  11. Select Add and enter the password.
  12. Wait until the Configure interface is complete and then press OK.
  13. Press X to exit the menu.
  14. You will briefly see the message "No connection to the cloud", and then the screen will then display the Pairing Code.
  15. Leave the pin pad at this screen and return to POS. Take a basket to the checkout screen and select your Moneris payment method.
  16. Because it’s the first time this payment method is being used, you will see a message saying "Please select a card reader". Tap Pair new device.

    Next, you will be prompted to enter the Terminal ID and the Pairing Code. The Terminal ID can be found at the back of your Moneris device - it’s the code that starts with “E”, usually followed by 7 digits. Your pairing code is already displayed on your pin pad's screen.

  17. Brightpearl POS will then take a few seconds to pair and initialize the reader. Once it's done, you will see the device is connected and the card reader is ready to take the payment. Proceed to use the card and complete the transaction.
  18. If you have already paired the device, select Add paired device and enter the terminal ID to connect.

Card reader | USAePAY EFT Device

Note: The USAePAY card reader is compatible with US accounts only.

To set up your USAePAY VEGA 3000 via WiFi:

  1. Start by adding USAePAY as a card payment method in Brightpearl's back office (if it hasn't already been done). You can find out how here.
  2. Make sure you have added USAePAY as a payment method in the Brightpearl back office, under Settings > Brightpearl POS > Store settings > {select store} > Payment methods.
  3. Go to https://secure.usaepay.com/login?type=res and login using your username and password.
  4. Open Settings > Device Manager and click the + below the title.
  5. Enter a device name you will use to identify the device.
  6. In the source key field, start typing the name you provided as the API key name. It should appear in the list for you to select.
  7. Select Register.
  8. Make a note of the provided pairing code.
  9. On your card reader device, press and hold the 9 button until you hear the second beep sound.
  10. The screen will then display the WiFi network options. Choose your preferred one using the number keys.
  11. Enter the network password.
  12. Once the connection is established, you will be asked to enter the pairing code.
  13. Enter the pairing code provided.
  14. Your device will establish a connection and make any necessary updates. On your account’s Device Manager page you will see the device that you have just registered.
  15. Once the device is ready, it will display a message reading “Welcome”.
  16. When prompted to fill in the Source Key and PIN you will need to go back to your USAePAY merchant account. Go to Settings > API keys > Select your API key and copy and paste the PIN and Source Key into Brightpearl.
  17. Do not select the test mode if this is a live account.
  18. Return to POS, and take a basket to the checkout screen. Select the USAePAY payment method.

  20. Select your card reader from the list.
  21. The card reader will then display the amount of the sale as well as a POS card payment message.
  22. Complete the payment.
